Jana’s Story

This is one of many stories from across RGP, stories that show what it really means to Dare to Work Differently®.

Each week, after a full day of work, Jana closed her laptop with intention and headed out the door.

The transition was quick, sometimes rushed, but always happened.

Evenings at Community Garden Kitchen moved with coordination.

Volunteers stepped into well-practiced roles, working alongside a classically trained chef who guided the preparation of each meal.

Ingredients, many of them rescued from local grocery stores, bakeries, and restaurants, were transformed into dishes that were delicious and well balanced.

And what did the guests encounter when they arrived? A warm greeting by a host who seated them at a table, and then a meal served in courses, beginning with bread and ending with dessert. The experience mirrored that of any neighborhood restaurant, except there wasn’t a bill at the end.

The kitchen operates on a philosophy of “dining with dignity,” an idea shaped by founder Angela Poet.

Angela’s goal was not only to address food insecurity, but to rethink how support is delivered—creating an environment where people feel respected and not marginalized.

Her vision extends beyond a single location. From the outset, the model has been designed to expand, built on partnerships with food banks, local businesses, and a network of volunteers who make the operation possible.

Conversations about additional locations are already underway, with the intention of bringing the same approach to other communities that face similar challenges.

Each evening reflects that broader ambition in small, consistent ways.

The menu typically centers on a single thoughtfully prepared dish, allowing the team to serve as many people as possible. Portions are carefully planned so that everyone who walks through the door can be accommodated.

By the end of the week, the care extends further. Guests are offered additional food to take with them, bridging the gap until the kitchen reopens.

Working in this environment reshaped how Jana sees the people around her.

“I’ve come to recognize how many different circumstances bring someone through the doorfamilies balancing multiple jobs, older individuals navigating daily limitations, and others whose needs are less visible at first glance.”

And that awareness carries into her professional life.

As a consultant working across technical and financial systems, she knows the importance of understanding the human context behind every interaction.

Volunteering requires commitment. Even on busy days, Jana chose to step away from work at a set time, knowing that the evening hinged on people showing up.

The kitchen became more than a place to volunteer. It became a part of how Jana understood community. And how small, coordinated efforts can create something that is meaningful and lasting.

This is what it means to Dare to Work Differently.
